Sita sings the Blues

Just finished watching Nina Paley’s animated film Sita Sings the Blues. Loosely based on the Ramayana, the film weaves the music of Annette Hanshaw and the story of Paley’s marriage into the Sanskrit epic. Interestingly, the film fielded harsh criticism from both right- and left-wing groups in India (for being anti-Hindi and for being neocolonialist).

Not sure where I stand on it yet…although I thought the animations were adorable. What think ye?
