Ok…so it doesn’t have quite the ring of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe, but still…
One of my favorite eateries in Atlanta this summer was Daddy D’z BBQ Joynt. AMAZING BBQ, I kid you not (although not NC-style, to all my fellow UNC students). Spence and I discovered this place on our first weekend in ATL. We had come out to the Eyedrum to participate in MondoHomo festivities (quasi-work-related for me), but we were a little early. We decided to wander around for a bit, and were lured by the smell of the most incredible smoked pork BBQ. Mmm…my mouth is watering just thinking about it…
Anyway, we ended up going back there just about every week, if only for the heavenly fried green tomatoes (yes, I ordered them every single time we went). I think this recipe is pretty close, but I’ve got to try it out a few more times (….need…tomatoes…). Enjoy!
Fried Green Tomatoes
- 4 to 6 green tomatoes, sliced 1/4-inch thick
- salt and pepper
- flour for dusting
- 2 eggs, beaten
- cornmeal or bread crumbs
- bacon grease or vegetable oil
Salt and pepper tomato slices; dust lightly with flour. Dip slices in beaten egg, let excess drip off, coat well with meal or crumbs. Fry in hot grease or oil (grease will taste way better) until browned, turning gently (~3 min each side). Eat hot.
